tiaz: "Hello, this is Matthias. Please leave me a message after the tone unless there is a fire in which case I urge you to call the fire department and vacate the premises immediately. If you believe I am better qualified than the fire department to handle this particular type of fire, call my cellphone which either <boss> or <boss2> should be able to provide pending fire verification." comments

I will have a Tungsten C blank screen with a side of vomit - Wednesday, October 4, 2006 1:45 pm
Isis had some pretty wretched puke attacks last night.  I am a little sleep deprived myself because of it all.  Kat was really upset about it all.  This weekend I have the "shutdown" at work.  That shouldn't be pleasant.    My Palm Tungsten C has been giving me problems as of late.  I decided to get a case for it and a pack of new batteries.  It was pretty cheap (< $20).  Much cheaper than a whole new palm.  I was having this issue where I would get a "blank screen" or "white screen" and the power button and reset button were totally unresponsive.  The damn thing wouldn't turn off or respond to any keys or anything.  So I had to find a tiny tiny torque screwdriver bit and take it apart.  After disconnecting the battery cable (its the only visible connector that can be easily unplugged in the back) and reconnecting it the palm came back to life.  Unfortunately, disconnecting the battery for that split second causes the memory to be wiped clean, but I have a backup on my desktop at home.  I have had to do this twice now, and it's kind of a pain to have to unscrew it and crack it open.  Apparently you can achieve the same effect by just draining the battery dry for however many hours and then recharge it.  I don't feel like waiting that long.  I hope this helps you!

new kernels and wireless problems - Thursday, September 28, 2006 2:44 pm
Kat started her new job with the health department yesterday. Yay! Go Kat.  I have been stuck at home because the daycare provider decided to take off wed, thurs, and fri.  What a way to spend my leave time.  I don't like being stuck at home.

On a more technical note, I upgraded my kernel on my laptop to 2.6.17.  Lo an behold, the wireless breaks!  Crap.  So I went and looked at the issue.     It doesn't work.  I get errors like this in my /var/log/syslog:

kernel: bcm43xx: Error: Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode4.fw" not available or load failed

And when I do an 'ifup wlan0', I get:

SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory

After much forum hunting I found out  there is a new driver for my broadcom network card.So I had to add this to my '/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist'

blacklist bcm43xx

This makes it so the crappy broadcom driver doesn't load and ndiswrapper driver loads up.  Yay, working wireless.  Thank god it didn't break the DRI driver for my Radeon IGP 345M (video card).  Getting that driver to work was a royal pain in my ass.

One issue I had been having was getting the framebuffer driver to work under the console.  Typically you would use "RADEONFB"  but this driver does not support my video card and I'll be damned if I know how in the hell to get a driver that supports it.  This would be nice for using things like qingy or advanceMAME to work.  Any help? comments

inspiron 8000 is not for linux - Saturday, September 16, 2006 10:35 pm
So after hours of utter frustration I can only conclude this:
inspiron 8000 is not for linux
It's as if they are laughing at me.  The ATI Rage Mobility M4 does not work well under linux except for the VESA driver.  VESA=bare minimum driver to run anything at all.  That works okay, but ATI's proprietary driver does not support this video card AT ALL.  The DRI from freedesktop.org, which actually did  work on my HP ze5470us (sp?) makes X start with the screen at what looks like 640x480 and it's totally scrambled and unusable.  It's like watching those scrambled porn channels, but it's not even half as exciting because you know you're not going to be seeing any boobs :(

Anyways, I moved into my new cube on Friday, and it's with Keith, my super huge boss.  It's a little crammed.  The desk is nice I suppose, it's at least blue instead of blah beige.  It's like, modern basement as opposed to 60's no taste basement. I finally put my new computer desk together at home.  It's not too shabby.  It's the first time I have had an actual computer desk at my house since I moved out of my parent's house 5 years ago.  I guess I can't complain, but I will anyway.

crikey - Tuesday, September 12, 2006 10:52 pm
So I was writing this really cool script that makes the color schemes on my page morph and shift like some kind of psychedelic acid trip.  I finished it, and it works, and it looks really sweet.  I don't have it up because I have been trying to obfuscate it manually.  What a pain.  I wish javascript wasn't so stealable.  But hey, if I couldn't steal javascript half of the things I have done on my pages would not have been possible.
I have to give a shout out to Mr. Steve Irwin, the crocodile hunter, as he died after a sting ray to the heart last week.  How ironic.  I feel sorry for fans and for his young family most of all.  It was said best however, that in the show, imminent death was the unscripted everpresent co-star.  He finally made his big debut and no one will ever see the footage.  That's okay, nobody really like that character that much anyway.  If you'll notice the page should now work in safari pretty well, although sans the cool javscript effects on www.djekz.com.   As long as the page looks pretty similar thats what matters.   I have been a bit sluggish and depressed lately.   Mostly out of boredom I suppose.  I beat the first expansion pack for neverwinter nights yesterday.  Now work seems so dull and soul crushing again.  At least that provided some kind of occasional reprieve.  Now what to do?  Soon I will be moved from my cozy cube that I had to myself to a cube with Keith.  I mean, granted Keith is probably one of the coolest guys I could get crammed in a cube with at the NCC.  But it still sucks to be in that situation.  Kat has been pissed off and unhappy because of the whole no car, no job, stir crazyness.  Getting on her case helps so much but I know there is little she can really do so it doesn't really help.
I really need to devote more time to music. The whole same job, same house, same  problems, same solutions, same everything, every day is the same. Something needs to change, my life has digressed a pattern into a rountine that I need to change somehow so I can have more music time.  This website with it's occasional random and incoherent rants consume so much of my lifeforce.  Then there are pictures.  I need to get the wedding pictures sorted and blabbity blah.  I suppose I could do that at work tomorrow.  It's kind of like looking at a mountain with a hand pick to me.  I know it's not really that many pictures.  I mean, there are 2524 pictures on this website, so 700 shouldn't really be that much to manage should it?  Crikey

Javscriptalicious - Monday, September 4, 2006 10:32 am
I am working on redesigning the site so that it does not rely on javascript as much.  Apparently Safari doesn't play nice with djekz.com.   Thanks a lot Em.  I guess.... Ack    So if the page looks a little... off, it's prolly just me trying to make it better.  My daughter has problems.  She's watching Grave of the fireflies.  That movie is so sad.   It's about post world war 2 japan.  Specifically about a teenage boy and his four year old sister.  Their mother dies in an air raid at the beginning and they have no home and are on their own.  He tries to live with his aunt but she's a major biatch.  Anyway, the rest of the movie he's trying to survive by himself with his sister.  He finds out his father has been killed in the navy.  Then slowly he and his sister starve to death and he dies at the end with no family and nothing.  The conflict resolution is the death of all of the main characters.  That's not a disney ending!  For some reason Isis wants to watch it.  All of the time.  She thinks it's cool because there is this candy in it because she is a total sugar junkie.  I have explained several times that everyone is dead in the end and I don't want to watch the movie with her.  That girl is not right in the head. comments

yesterday sucked - Wednesday, August 30, 2006 1:54 pm
I woke up in the morning to Isis screaming at the top of her lungs.  You'd think the kid was having her toes cut off with a pair of scissors.  That was not the case though.  She was screaming because kat wanted to drink some of the water in her cup that she brought in.  Jeez. Not a good way to wake up.  Then I get stuck in traffic on 70.  When you take the 29 north exit to 70 east, you have no exits until the beltway, so if there is traffic, you are screwed.  It was the kind of traffic that you see just after you get too far onto the exit ramp to go anywhere else.  Blech.  My commute extended by 25 min.  I was actually going to be really early yesterday too.  I didn't have any cereal to bring for breakfast.  The cafeteria at the NCC forgets the butter on my bagel.  You can't have a bagel just plain.  It's like a sin.  Then my boss starts flipping out because his boss, and his boss' boss are flipping out about some issue that happened a week and a half ago.  Then I get home and find out that food lion no longer carries berry burst cheerios.  Giant had already stopped carrying them a month ago.  I can't seem to find a place to buy Cheerios on Cheerios' website. There's a novel idea.  Isis then proceeded to be a royal pain in the ass the rest of the night.  I went to Max's in Fells Point to hang out with Christian, Jon, and Kevin Ingram.  That was pretty cool.  Today on the other hand has been pretty calm.
